Tonight, the city council will consider amending the city’s new soft-story seismic retrofit ordinance to include an exemption from the city’s minimum parking requirements for multi-family buildings with 5 or more units in them.
While this is a good step to making the new ordinance actually implementable—often soft story buildings have their parking underneath the building making seismic retrofits extremely difficult.
So here’s the question. These same considerations exist for buildings with 1-4 units in them, what will it take to get the city to enact the same exemption for these buildings?
