Alameda Point at the Sierra Club

March 24, 2009

Sometimes life just gets a little crazy, and the next thing you know it’s been weeks before you’ve blogged. So much has been going on, and yet I haven’t been able to sit down and write.

Last night, the Sierra Club’s Northern Alameda County Group (NACG) approved a letter that while remaining neutral on the Alameda Point project (pending the release of the ballot language in the next couple of weeks) also indicates conditional support for the concepts included in the SunCal Redevelopment Concept Plan. (I’m trying to find an electronic copy of the language to post, check back if you’re interested).

It’s nice to see the Sierra Club, which has been involved in this issue for a looooong time, starting to turn their involvement into positive social change. They are continuing to monitor the clean-up issues, and it’s clear that any support of a plan is contingent on the land being cleaned up before being built on–a position that would be difficult to argue with.

The letter also calls out the Alameda Point Vision as having many statements that are in synch with the club’s (and the NACG’s) policy guidelines, which after all the work that the many people who worked on it, and the hundreds of people who gave input, was gratifying. A decision on signing onto the statement will take place another day.
